High Valley Talk Deep Love for Music & Family
by Nicole Hills
The Country Source recently had the opportunity to sit down and chat with brothers Curtis and Brad Rempel who make up the country duo High Valley while they were at a tour stop in Iowa.
The two-time CCMA Group/Duo of the Year have been on the road a lot in the last few years, covering many countries in a short period of time. They value their success across the globe and while they tour a lot in the US, their recent tour brought them to Europe, where their single ‘Make You Mine’ is at the top of the charts. When asked how they determine what music to play, Brad said “We wake up in the morning, and whatever continent we’re on, we pull out our phones and look at the charts to see what’s at the top.”
It’s an incredible feeling for the duo originally from La Crete, Alberta. With a current two-week #1 in Canada in ‘I Be U Be’ and ‘She’s With Me’ currently climbing the US charts, it’s crazy for them to see how their fans can find High Valley’s music via different avenues. Curtis noted that he’s amazed how easily people can find their music and listen to unreleased songs, creating a solid fan base. He added, “It blows us away to see people singing along to songs we haven’t yet released…it keeps us going.”
Brad and Curtis have always had their sights set on Nashville because it’s at the core of country music. Brad said that he originally moved to Nashville in order to challenge himself as a songwriter. He said that surrounding himself with the best songwriters makes him up his game. Their favorite memory of their journey so far is playing the Opry with Ricky Skaggs. Both Brad and Curtis said that they were honored to be playing their single on the same stage as their idol they grew up listening to. It’s a memory neither one of them will forget.
With so much time on the road, phone calls to home are frequent. Brad said that he had talked to his family three times that day, and none of the conversations involved what he was doing on the road, but rather what was happening at home. Curtis and his wife, Myranda, welcomed a baby girl into their family in April. He said that she’s a great baby and is an amazing sleeper, which is obviously welcomed by the new parents. He also noted that Millie Jean’s big brother has adjusted well, but sometimes gets a little too rambunctious just as any three year old will do.
When the duo has some down time on the road, they enjoy playing Monopoly Deal on the bus. One of Curtis’ party tricks is juggling, and he chuckled when asked how he took up the hobby, replying that he was babysitting his niece one day and taught himself using her baby toys as she was taking a nap. We asked if there was any friendly sibling rivalry between the two of them to which they noted if either pulled any pranks on the other, they’d kill each other, so everything is always on the up and up.
High Valley’s current single ‘She’s With Me’ is available on their Dear Life album. The band returns to the Midwest on July 22nd, when they play at Country Jam USA in Eau Claire, WI. Keep your eye on The Country Source, as we will have your chance to meet them coming soon!
